Audra McDonald's talents are unmatched in the range and variety of her work in her roles as a performer, singer and actor. In 2015, she was awarded record-breaking seven Tony Awards as well as two Grammy Awards and Emmy Awards. The actress was also identified by Time magazine among the 100 most influential people and was awarded with the National Medal of Arts - the top honor in America in recognition of artistic excellence and achievement - by President Barack Obama. A musically inclined family, McDonald was raised in Fresno California and received her singing training in the classical style at New York's Juilliard School. In 1994, a year following her graduation from Juilliard School, McDonald was awarded the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in the Musical" for her performance in Carousel. In the four following years, she was awarded two more Tony Awards as a featured actress for her roles on Terrence Mcnally's Broadway debuts Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998). Her total number of Tony Awards is unprecedented at three prior to the age of 30. In 2004 she won her fourth Tony for her role as Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012 she won her fifth Tony Award, and her first win in the lead actress category for her title role performance in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. In the year she received her sixth Tony Award in 2014 her performance in Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill became the most prestigious Broadway production. In 2017 she made her West End London West End debut, and was also nominated for the Olivier Award. Along with setting the record for most competitive wins by an actor she also became the first person to receive awards across all four categories. The credits she has in the theater include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night marked McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is The Making of the Musical Seduction of 1921-and All That Followed. McDonald made her TV debut with the award-winning Peabody Award-winning CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First Hundred Years. Then, in 1999 she appeared alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber on the Disney/ABC television version of Annie. Then, in 2000, she played a regular role in NBC's well-known program Law & Order Special Victims Unit. Following the first Emmy nomination in recognition of her role in the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit directed by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned on television network in 2003 on the political drama Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and with Josh Brolin. Early in 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The following year, she became an actor who appeared on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald received the 4th Emmy nomination in recognition of her performance in the HBO film special Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in the year 2016. In 2021, she starred alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in the film The Bite, a pandemic film produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. McDonald has a brief appearance in The Good Wife, a CBS Legal drama The Good Wife as U.S. attorneys Liz Lawrence and Liz Reddick between 2009 and 2018. She reprised her role (now named Liz Reddick) in The Good Fight as an Paramount+ season regular. McDonald received nominations for three Critics Choice Award awards. She's currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes's historic comedy The Gilded Age.
